Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was developed from early 20th century Kodokan ground techniques (Ne-Waza) that were taught by a number of individuals including Takeo Yano, Mitsuyo Maeda, and Soshihiro Satake.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experiments, practices, and adaptation of Kodokan Judo by Carlos and Helio Gracie as well as other instructors who were students of Mitsuyo Maeda, such as Luiz Franca. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has rapidly become the most in-demand martial art style in the United States and is widely accepted as the most effective martial art for self-defense.
